Let’s face it: most people don’t look forward to cleaning their windows. It’s already a chore, but if you’re unsure of how to clean them properly, it becomes even more of a headache.

Windows are an important part of your home, and you want to keep them clean and sparkling all year round! This guide will help you clean your windows with ease.

How Often Should You Clean Your Windows?

This answer depends on factors like weather, the type of window, and personal preference. Many people clean the exterior of their windows in the spring (after buildup from the winter months), and the interior every month or so. It’s good to make it a habit to check your windows inside and out when the season changes to see if any areas need to be cleaned.

In Wisconsin, windows take a hit from the winter snow, salt, and ice, so spring is the perfect time to clean your windows. If you or someone in your home has seasonal allergies, also consider cleaning your windows in late summer to get rid of those irritants. Similarly, consider cleaning your windows more often if someone in your home is allergic to dust.

Supplies You Need to Clean Your Windows

To clean your windows, you’re going to dust, wash, and let them dry. For the most thorough cleaning, you’ll clean the windows, window frames, and screens.

Before starting, make sure you have the following:

  • A cloth (microfiber works well) or lint-free paper towel
  • A window cleaner (whether DIY or store-bought)
  • A vacuum cleaner

If you choose to go make your own window cleaner, here is an easy cleaner you can make (courtesy of goodhousekeeping.com):

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol with 70% concentration
  • 2 drops grease-cutting dish liquid
  • 1 to 2 drops of orange or lemon essential oil (optional)

How To Clean Your Windows

  1. Dust the window frame and window with a microfiber cloth, paper towel, or duster. Then, vacuum the track (if applicable). If cleaning the exterior, remove the screens. Don’t skip this step because spraying cleaner on top of dusty windows will only spread around dirt!
  2. Spray the window with a generous amount of cleaner. Wipe down with a cloth or paper towel. You may need to do this a few times depending on how dirty the window is. Wash down the window track with soap and water, if applicable.
  3. Clean the screens by vacuuming them or washing them. Let them air dry.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 on each window until all dirt, grime, and streaks are gone.
  5. Put your screens back in after they dry.

This is also a great time to clean your window treatments, such as curtains and blinds.

How to Keep Your Windows Streak-Free

After cleaning your windows, it’s recommended to use a microfiber towel to keep them streak-free. You can also use a squeegee after wiping the windows to maintain a streak-free appearance but be aware that squeegees can cause the liquid to drip to your floor. Some people also use newspaper!

Windows That Are Easier to Keep Clean

If you’re looking to replace your windows, there are some types that are easier to clean than others. For people who consider this an important factor, we recommend these windows:

  • Double hung: Tilt-in sashes make it a breeze to clean inside and out.

  • Sliding windows: A few moving parts make it easy to clean (just make sure to clean the track too).
