What are the Benefits of Bay Windows?

Bay windows are made up of three windows that protrude from the exterior wall, creating a bay (which is how they get their name). Their ability to bring in light and create a small alcove makes them a great centerpiece for any room, with additional benefits including:

  • Versatile design options
  • Unobstructed views
  • Expanded interior space
  • Enhanced curb appeal
  • Increased property value

Types of Bay Windows

Bay windows are characterized by a large central window flanked by two side windows. However, the arrangement and styles of the windows allow for a variety of different bay window types.

  • Traditional Bay Windows

A traditional bay window is the most common type. These consist of a large, straight-facing picture window with two smaller windows (typically casement or double-hung) angled on either side.

  • Box Bay Windows

Box bay windows still have the straight-facing picture window that traditional bay windows have, but their side windows are flat windows angled straight out at 90-degrees, creating an extended box.

  • Oriel Bay Windows

An oriel bay window looks similar to a traditional bay window, except that it protrudes from the wall without reaching the ground. These are typically found on the second floor and are supported by brackets.

Frequently Asked Bay Window Questions

  • Bay windows are made up of three windows, with a central picture window and casement windows on each side. They typically have a more angular, geometric look. Meanwhile, a bow window is made up of four or more windows (which are often a series of casement windows), and they tend to have a gentle curve that offers a softer look. Bow windows can be installed in corners, while bay windows are installed along walls. Typically, bow windows are larger and more expensive than bay windows.

  • Although the main picture window of a bay window can’t be opened, the side casement windows typically can be. This allows you to enjoy all the visual benefits of a large picture window while still getting good airflow.

  • Because bay windows offer plenty of natural light and space, they are best suited for living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, or bedrooms. It’s important to consider your surroundings when choosing where to put your bay window, since it will provide an unobstructed view of the outdoors.

  • Bay windows are typically installed under the eaves of your roof. If you do not have any roof overhang or eaves where you want to install a bay window, then a small roof or skirt may be built to help it blend more seamlessly into your home.
