What are the Benefits of Double-Hung Windows?

When you think of windows, you likely picture a double-hung window. Double-hung windows have upper and lower sashes that can be separately moved up or down, allowing you to open your window from the top or bottom. They offer numerous benefits, including:

  • Energy-efficiency
  • Ease of maintenance
  • Enhanced security (double lock system)
  • Space-saving design
  • Increased ventilation
  • Timeless style

Types of Double-Hung Windows

Although all double-hung windows are designed to open from the top and bottom, they are available for installation or replacement in two distinct types that protect your home while still giving it a classic look.

  • Traditional Double-Hung Window

Traditional double-hung windows have two sashes that can slide vertically up and down, independently of each other. This allows you to more easily control how much air you’re letting into your home.

  • Tilt-in Double-Hung Window

A tilt-in double-hung window has upper and lower sashes that can be opened by tilting the two window panels inward (into your home) from the top. This allows for easier cleaning and increased security.

Frequently Asked Double-Hung Window Questions

  • Although they look very similar, a single-hung window has only one part that slides open. That’s because the upper glass panel is fixed in place, which means you can only raise or lower the bottom half. Meanwhile, double-hung windows have TWO sliding sashes that allow you to open the bottom half or the upper half.

  • Yes, double-hung windows do have some size limitations. They’re typically anywhere from 24 to 48 inches wide and 35 to 72 inches tall. Any larger than that, and special framing may need to be involved to support the weight.

  • The best place to install a double-hung window is areas of your room where you want to balance ventilation, natural light, and access to outdoor views. They’re most commonly found in living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms.

  • Thanks to their double-sash design, double-hung windows allow you to let hot air out of the top while allowing cool air come in through the bottom, increasing energy efficiency. When closed, their double locking system creates a tight seal that blocks drafts and prevents heat from escaping better than most windows.
